Our band consists of 3 people: Szymek Mika (double bass), Artur Małecki (drums) and Marcin Małek (piano and keyboards). Our first opportunity to play together was at the beginning of 2023, during the exams crowning the winter semester at the Cracow academy. Exploring jazz standards together and experimenting with our own pieces and collective improvisation gave us so much joy that we decided to form a trio called Mika / Małecki / Małek.
As a band, we strive to combine the exploration of sonorism with the expressive improvisation characteristic of modern jazz. We draw inspiration from both 20th century classical music and the jazz tradition. We perform original compositions and our own arrangements of well-known jazz standards. We also do not shy away from free improvisation, which we often perform as an ensemble.
Winning competition laurels as a band is yet to come, but each member has already achieved many successes at Polish and international competitions. These include such events as the Blue Note Poznań Competition, the Jazz Juniors Competition, the Tarnów International Jazz Contest, the Jazz on the Oder Individuality Contest, the 7th Virtual Jazz Club Contest, the New Hope of Jazz at the Novum Jazz Festival and many others.
