Today, Szymon Mika is regarded as one of the most compelling personalities on the European jazz scene. A guitarist, composer, and bandleader, he has consistently developed his own musical language, combining modern jazz with lyricism, spaciousness, and remarkable improvisational sensitivity. Mika has released more than 30 albums and received numerous prestigious awards and distinctions, including Guitarist of the Year by Jazz Forum magazine (2022), the Grand Prix at the Jarek Śmietana International Jazz Guitar Competition (2015), and the Jazz Forum New Hope award (2016). His talent has also been recognized by world class musicians such as Peter Bernstein, Mike Stern, and John Abercrombie.
Mika graduated from the Academy of Music in Katowice and the prestigious Jazzcampus Basel in Switzerland. As part of the Focusyear program, he collaborated and performed with artists including Dave Holland, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Joshua Redman, Avishai Cohen, Mark Turner, and Becca Stevens. He has appeared at numerous international festivals and jazz venues across Europe, building a reputation as one of the most recognizable Polish guitarists of the younger generation.
“AGMA” is Szymon Mika’s original international quintet, created specifically for a unique lineup of musicians representing different cultures and musical backgrounds.
The band’s music defies simple categorization. AGMA combines modern jazz, subtle lyricism, open forms of improvisation, and sounds inspired by the European contemporary improvised music scene. A particularly important role is played by the voice of Song Yi Jeon, treated not only as a carrier of lyrics but also as a fully fledged instrument co creating the ensemble’s narrative. Mika’s compositions leave space both for the carefully crafted sound of the quintet as a whole and for the spontaneous improvisational expression of each individual musician.
The album “Agma”, released in 2025, was met with highly enthusiastic critical acclaim. Reviewers highlighted the extraordinary unity of the band, the maturity of the compositions, and the exceptional chemistry between the musicians. Particularly impressive was the fact that the material was recorded almost entirely without prior rehearsals, with the musicians encountering the compositions together for the first time directly in the recording studio.
AGMA is not only a musical project, but also a symbol of artistic dialogue beyond borders. The ensemble has already performed in Poland, Slovakia, and Switzerland, including a two day artistic residency at the legendary Bird’s Eye club in Basel. Each concert becomes a meeting of five distinctive musical personalities whose shared energy creates an intensely emotional and immersive live experience.
About the album “Agma”, critic Krzysztof Komorek wrote:
“Agma” is listened to with bated breath. It is an album brilliantly conceived and translated perfectly into collective performance. Intriguing melodies, inventive improvisations, and an exceptional unity of the quintet. Perfection.
